Listening ground: community creative workshops

Participants’ listening reminder collages

I’m excited to be hosting some workshops this spring for young people in Shapinsay, Dounby and Hoy.

These workshops are focused on sound art’s main theme: listening.

In the first half of the workshop we will select a handful of activities together from a large set of listening prompts – easy for beginners and suitable for all ages, wherever you are. The listening prompts are grouped into collections that encourage us to explore ways of listening by considering

  • sounds and their sources
  • sound as sonic material
  • sound in relation to place and time
  • subjectivity/objectivity of listening

In the second half of the workshop we will put our listening experiences into a new context, and focus on listening while doing, either soundwalking or collaging as a group according to the weather conditions and preferences of those gathered on the day…

No prior experience is required: these interactive sessions are designed to inspire and be fun!
