In addition to supporting peer-learning activities and public engagement with research, I am deeply committed to activities aiming at ‘transferring knowledge’ from inside universities to the world at large.
My own PhD research examined perceptual constancy in real-room listening (in the domain of speech sciences). I undertook a series of listening experiments to test hypotheses about the manner and timescales at which human listeners adapt to the room, and built a computational model that simulates the main characteristics of this compensation mechanism.
Following this, I worked in software engineering projects at the University of Sheffield that aimed to encapsulate certain principles of human audition in machine listeners for educational, clinical and industrial applications. I contributed to the research design and resulting codebase for tools in computer assisted pronunciation training, conversational rehabilitation for cochlear implant users, and for bedside snore detection and assessment via smartphone. I moved to the University of Leeds in 2017 to join a project exploring the music listening behaviour of people with hearing aids (maintaining my collaboration with the Medical Physics division of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) and additionally worked on a project involving acoustic monitoring for ecological assessments.
I have contributed to a number of industry-facing publications and events, as follows:
