Dead Sands

Dead Sands (2020)
40 cm x 115 cm. Collage.

This work depicts the expected effects of climate change on the coastal land where my maternal family have lived in recent generations.

The central area of the image shows the low-lying land that is predicted to be lost to the sea within the lifetimes of our children. While higher ground survives on the right, the sea advances from the left into the farms and houses in Stenness, Orkney. The Dead Sands, a small tidal peninsula on my cousin’s farm, is already missing from Climate Central’s flood map representing the current area landmass.
